I thought it would be interesting to see how the children responded to this set of questions, adapted from Tanya’s list. Anything in [] is mine.

God protects the stupid too.

It was Cheanna’s turn to take the recycling out to the big blue can on Thursday afternoon. She grabbed the first load, I took the kitchen garbage bag and we headed out the door and around to our gate. When I came back to get the box of paper I found a big helper ready to do his part.

Ephraim stood there clapping his milk jugs together, grinning and then he carefully set them down, backed over the step, grabbed them and started walking. So cute!
Over 120,000 tons annually.
It’s about 20% of the of solid waste thrown away by City of Phoenix residents every year (just metro Phoenix, not Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe, etc.).
Phoenix recycles–we’re happy to place our blue can curbside every Tuesday morning.Â
Our homeschool group toured the Phoenix recycling plant on Thursday, expanding our knowledge of waste management and city operations. Our guide plugged working for the city several times (truck drivers start at $25/hour!).
My thoughts centered on not dry heaving while at the recycling plant, which is part of a larger campus that includes a sewage treatment facility, transfer station for both private and public garbage haulers, mulching operations, and a now closed landfill. The smells accompanying those activities outside was enough to make me gag–I opted not to take the brief walk inside the sorting facility after the door opened and the smell times twenty flooded my nostrils. The recycling materials are sorted by hand to take contaminents out, items that can’t be recycled. The #1 offender? Diapers. *shudder*
The children received a packet with a recycling activity and coloring book, a ruler made from recycled materials, a pencil made from recycled currency, and a plastic lid for soda cans. We learned quite a bit!

In adding some new features to the blog there are some errors showing up in the code. I am working on them and the site should be error free soon.
